Based on the twenty-six wounds inflicted on Cuban national hero Antonio Maceo during the wars of independence, twenty six mothers relay versions of attacks that wounded their sons. Evoking the spirit of Maceo’s mother Mariana Grajales, the women appear to defend their ‘Maceos’ as they reveal subjective truths and fragments of events that have reconstructed lives. The mothers’ stories remind viewers of the forgotten versions of history; question preconceived notions of bravery and honour; and challenge the concepts of the hero and anti-hero in society.
